GeoData at the International Public Policy Conference

The International Public Policy Conference, which took place between September 5 and 7, 2013, was the largest environmental event in Romania and was the focal point of the Green Cities Forum. Brand leaders in the field of public environmental policies, both nationally and internationally, participated in this event. This was a place of debate and learning for mayors from Romanian and European cities, who wanted to hear directly from experts about the measures they can implement to make their cities more environmentally friendly.

The conference brought together under its roof national and international leaders in the field of public environmental policies, representatives of cities in Romania and Europe, as well as private companies that are active in the field of environmental sustainability. The event was attended by over 300 representatives of local and national authorities in Europe, including mayors, presidents of county councils, parliamentarians, public administrators, local and county councilors, as well as civil servants. Representatives of non-governmental environmental organizations and the business environment were also present. The main purpose of the conference was to analyze the best practices in the field of public environmental policies and to promote the exchange of experience between the participants.

At the conference, 8 workshops were organized in parallel, each with a specific focus, to bring together mayors and deputy mayors, public administrators, local councilors, urban planning specialists, green finance, climate change mitigation, digitization and mobility, in to develop sustainable and efficient solutions for our cities.

In the urban planning workshop, partners in organizing a workshop were Urbanize Hub and European Urban Initiative | THEM. This workshop was conceived as a form of "urban therapy", focusing on the ideas of collaborative methods and participation in urban planning processes.

The participants, which included chief architects, urban planners, local councilors and others, were engaged in an interactive process where they discussed the benefits and their experiences of participatory methods in urban planning. Examples of projects based on such participatory approaches were presented, with Liniei Park being a concrete example resulting from such a process.

In the second part of the workshop, Alexandru Matei from the European Urban Initiative | EUI introduced us to European funding opportunities that emphasize community engagement and public participation. These are effective methods to initiate projects that are more open and well thought out in collaboration with the community. The visit to Platforma Rulmentul inspired us to explore how we can use these forms of public participation in a project with significant potential for Brasov.
